You may have noticed a plethora of black-and-white selfies of women on your Instagram feed this week — The Young and the Restless star Beth Maitland certainly did.
Beth Maitland On Sisterhood
The reason is there’s a viral campaign going around as a way for women to show appreciation for other women. The idea is to post a black-and-white photo with the hashtags #ChallengeAccepted and #WomenSupportingWomen and identify other women to do the same.
Women then nominate other women privately through direct messaging, inviting them to post their own black and white selfie, with a supporting comment or two about the importance of female friendships and sisterhood. Maitland never received such a DM and wondered about other women out there.
“No one nominated me or tagged me today for #womensupportingwomen, so I gave that some thought,” she shared. “I saw amazing posts throughout the day of sexy powerful smart women sharing their photos and their female relationships.
“I saw women nominating friends and colleagues and family for the challenge to lift each other up. As I watched it occurred to me that one other thing women do better than any other being is stand alone. Defying adversity. Facing unthinkable things with grace and fierceness and love.”
That’s why she chose to post a photo of herself when she was 18 side-by-side with a photo of her 18-year-old daughter.
“Alone and together we are all women of excellence and promise who try every day to live our best lives with integrity and grit,” she said. “Whatever is required.”
Among those who weighed in with support were Don Diamont (ex-Brad, now Bill on The Bold and the Beautiful), Melissa Ordway (Abby), and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis), who believes she actually did tag Maitland when she posted her own photo, writing “Girl!!!! I did!!! I remember doing it!!!!! Anyway! You are AMAZING!!!!!!! I love you so much!!!” The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
