Sandy Dvore, the artist who designed the signature logo for The Young and the Restless (YR) has passed away. He was 86 years old.

Iconic The Young and the Restless Artist Dies

“It is with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes that I post this,” wrote Meg, Sandy’s assistant, whose Instagram handle is @theartistshand42. “Sandy passed away peacefully just before midnight on November 20. I am relieved that he is no longer in pain. He was at home where he wanted to be with Kid and family. Someone was with him and holding his hand as he passed.

“I’m sorry to share this sad news as I know how fond of him and how much everyone enjoyed his stories,” Meg added. “But I knew that you too would be relieved that he is no longer in pain or suffering any longer. Let’s raise a red solo cup to absent friends.”

Dvore was a native of Chicago, Illinois. He studied at the American Academy of Art from 1953-1954. He then moved to Hollywood where he worked briefly as an actor before moving into graphic arts.

The artist drew other logos for such series as Spenser: For Hire, The Waltons, North and South, Falcon Crest, The Patridge Family, and select seasons of Knots Landing. His work wasn’t limited to TV shows — Dvore also created the design for something you’ve drunk from many times, in all likelihood — the red Solo cup, hence the reference made by Meg above about raising one.

Dvore’s Instagram page has posts about his famous artwork and logos, including his contribution to the iconic daytime soap. Up until 1988, YR opened not with live-action footage of characters, as it does today, but with charcoal sketches of the cast member and the show’s name along with Dvore’s recognizable logo. Check out the video below that shows Dvore’s work on the CBS soap throughout the years.

“I turned on the TV this morning & there was my large red Young & Restless logo staring at me,” Dvore wrote in a post last July on his Instagram page. “Of course, it took me back to when they took my credit off the screen for absolutely no good reason. It used to say ‘Logo by Sandy Dvore’. I threw away enough money on a couple of lawyers trying to get it back up when I cared about it. They accomplished nothing.”

Dvore won a Daytime Emmy for his work in YR in creating the 1984 opening, but he says he was informed that he wouldn’t be getting a statuette. “[T]hey called from NY,” Dvore wrote in his post, “they said ‘I won but they weren’t giving a statue since I had no competition.’

“My assistant at the time, Peter Cohl @cohl.photo took the call,” Dvore recalls. “He came in to explain it to me. He keeps in touch with me on Instagram. He remembers that call well…In any case, I think it’s time they gave me the statue. I hope all of you out there agree that that would be the right thing to do.”

The artist won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1987 for creating the main title of the TV special Carol, Carl, Whoopi, and Robin, which starred Carol Burnett, Carl Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams.

Dvore is survived by his family in Chicago, which includes a sister and brother-in-law as well as three nephews and great-nieces, and great-nephews. Soap Hub sends sincere condolences to Dvore’s family at this difficult time. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
