The Young and the Restless is now regularly airing soap classic episodes as the coronavirus has put a temporary halt to the production of new episodes. The show has decades of programs to choose from, but actress Camryn Grimes would like to see one show, in particular, be rebroadcast.
The actress is referring to the 2005 episode in which her original character, Cassidy “Cassie” Newman, dies in her hospital bed, succumbing to injuries she sustained in a car crash that she, ironically, caused when she decided to drive a drunk Daniel (Michael Graziadei) home after a party.
“I think it’s been mentioned that we want to stay away from episodes that will make people really sad, but [Cassie’s death] is something that people ask about,” Camryn Grimes recently shared with TV Insider. The two-time Emmy-winner is offering a bonus if CBS opts to rebroadcast her character’s death. “If they re-air it,” she promises, “I’ll live tweet it!”
Count her co-star and pal Mishael Morgan (Amanda; ex-Hilary) among those on whom the episode made an impression. “I remember watching when Cassie died and being so sad!” Morgan says. “I was watching [The Young and the Restless] back then. I also remember when Camryn won her Daytime Emmy [for Outstanding Younger Leading Actress in a Drama Series in 1999]. It’s surreal now that we’re on the show and are friends in real life.”
It wasn’t until later that Cassie’s grieving parents, Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow) — where were their nominations that year?! – learned that Daniel wasn’t behind the wheel of the fatal crash — Cassie was. The couple’s marriage eventually dissolved as a result of their inability to connect following Cassie’s death. Nick drifted into an affair with Phyllis (Michelle Stafford).
Cassie predicted on her death bed that Nick and Sharon would someday have another daughter, which they did with Faith (Alyvia Alyn Lind). What Cassie didn’t know is that she had a twin out there — Mariah! Stay tuned to see if YR selects Cassie’s death as a classic episode to be rebroadcast. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
