On International Women’s Day, The Young and the Restless star Daniel Goddard had to say goodbye to a very important woman in his life — his maternal grandmother.

Goddard, who plays Cane Ashby on Y&R, shared with fans that his beloved 97-year-old grandmother has died.

“(My grandmother) fought the stigma of inequality for years,” Goddard posted, “and in 1939 when World War 2 broke out she and women like her all around the world went to work in the factories to do the jobs of the men who went off to fight.”

The actor adds this his mother, 76, is “a living role model for the generations of women who now carry the torch that not only my Grandmother, and Mother but millions of other women throughout history lit all those years ago.”

Soap Hub joins Goddard’s many fans in sending sincere condolences to the actor on his loss and thanks for his beautiful tribute, which you can read below in its entirety.

The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS.Check local listings for airtimes.

My Grandma was born in 1913 long before women had the right to vote. She fought the stigma of inequality for years and in 1939 when World War 2 broke out she and women like her all around the world went to work in the factories to do the jobs of the men who went off to fight. This incredible woman gave birth to my mother, and was raised with the knowing that with hard work, self belief and a strong moral conviction a woman could do and be anything. In the 1970’s my mother began to follow in the footsteps of her mother when she joined “The Women’s Liberation Movement” and advocated for women’s rights and equal pay. My mum didn’t have daughters but sons… and we were blessed to grow up and watch her tireless campaign to shatter the injustice of gender discrimination. Today… my grandmother has passed, all be it after a long and marvelous life of 97 years, and my mother is 76, and a living role model for the generations of women who now carry the torch that not only my Grandmother, and Mother but millions of other women through out history lit all those years ago. So, to all the strong independent, loving women that to this very day fight for change… know that you are loved, cherished and respected. #InternationalWomensDay
