Amanda Sinclair is a competent lawyer who is desperate to learn about and be accepted and loved by her birth family on The Young and the Restless. While her background is not in criminal law, she agreed to defend her maternal grandfather Sutton Ames (Jack Landron), who is being accused of killing Amanda’s birth father Richard. For her portrayal of a woman determined to get to the truth, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors for Y&R on Mishael Morgan.
Amanda’s not wearing blinders. She knows that her biological family reached out to her to take Sutton’s case because they knew her believing in him would send a clear message to a jury that if someone whom Sutton had wronged was supporting him…well, then he had to be innocent right?
The longer Amanda stayed on the case, the more she realized something was amiss. Then, she was thrown a twist when Naya Benedict (Ptosha Storey) confessed to killing Richard. After finding out that Sutton had visited Naya and was likely influencing her, she confronted her grandfather demanding answers. Amanda believes that Sutton Ames not only killed Richard but he convinced Naya to take the fall.
Amanda and Sutton encountered one another in the multi-purpose park set, however, it may as well have been in a packed courtroom as the legal eagle went into cross-examination mode. Amanda did her best to make Sutton sweat, proving in the process that she would be a dynamic criminal lawyer as she held her grandfather’s feet to the fire. Sure, Amanda was passionate as she questioned Sutton. She also presented a plausible theory as to how he got Naya to confess.
Amanda surmised that because Naya knows Sutton killed Richard, he wouldn’t hesitate to harm someone else close to her. “Did you threaten her?” Amanda demanded to know of her “witness.” “Or someone that she cares about? Was it her husband? Imani? Maybe it was me?”
Sutton maintained his innocence, but then Amanda went in for the (figurative) kill, a moment in which Mishael Morgan was able to truly shine. “You sold your soul for your career,” Amanda stated. “You gave up your own grandchildren, your own flesh and blood, and now, you’re willing to sacrifice your own daughter!”
Sutton patronized his granddaughter saying that he forgave her harsh words and added he wanted to hire her to defend Naya. What better way to position himself as a supportive father to Naya than to hire the best lawyer in town to defend her? The smooth-talking Sutton is either the mastermind behind Richard’s death and getting Naya to confess or he’s simply incapable of dropping his political persona. Perhaps it’s both?
One thing’s for sure — Amanda has never been more passionate towards her birth mother than she is now. If Sutton is actually trying to orchestrate a reunion between Amanda and Naya, he’s succeeding.
Later, Amanda recapped to Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) her encounter with Sutton. She shared that she plans on both defending Naya and bringing Sutton down. We have no idea how this storyline will play out, however, we are confident that Mishael Morgan will continue to deliver compelling performances as Amanda fights to learn the truth.
