The Young and the Restless viewers know that Summer Newman Abbott is devoted to her family of Kyle and Harrison. She also loves her mother, despite their recent estrangement. Phyllis’s supposed death caused Summer intense pain. For her performance, Soap Hub Performer of the Week honors for Y&R is presented to Summer’s portrayer, Allison Lanier.
Allison Lanier: Y&R Performer of the Week
This week, Lanier really nailed the difficult scenes at the gala when Chance (Conner Floyd) announced that Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) had died in a fiery ambulance clash. Her literal collapse into Kyle’s (Michael Mealor) arms conveyed how shocked Summer was to hear such terrible news about the mom she’d been so ashamed of recently.
She showcased all the emotions Summer felt through her facial expressions, which ranged from shock to disbelief to sadness. Her tears felt real as Summer struggled to accept what seemed to be her new reality.
Of course, some of the best moments of Lanier’s performance came when she confronted Diane (Susan Walters) for what she felt was her role in Phyllis’s demise. Summer was viciously mad, and the actress conveyed that with her furious tone and her angry expressions complete with frustrated tears. She spoke back to Kyle as he attempted to apologize, and Lanier’s body language seemed to barely contain her fury.
Finally, Summer left everyone shocked by her apparent about-face as she declared her grieving over. Allison Lanier struck a wonderfully surprising tone of voice when she said Summer’s lines so nonchalantly. Her family was right to be worried because the actress revealed that it seemed like Summer was living in denial. Too bad Summer’s tears are all for nothing, though, since Phyllis faked her death.
Bravo on an excellent performance. We absolutely cannot wait to see more as this twisted tale plays out. There’s little doubt in our minds that Summer’s fury will be untamed if and when she learns this whole thing was a plot from Phyllis and Jeremy (James Hyde).
