Whether The Young and the Restless gives Sharon Case a heavy story like a cancer diagnosis or Sharon learning of her daughter’s hangover, the actress delivers an emotional, poignant performance worthy of the tale she’s asked to bring to life. Case, a Daytime Emmy winner for her role on YR, always finds the emotional beats that result in her being utterly compelling — hence why she has been chosen Performer of the Week.
In the show’s Thanksgiving episode, Sharon learned that her daughter, Faith (Alyvia Alyn Lind), had had her first hangover. She responded appropriately, staying relatively calm, but was still fully aware of just how impactful this news was.
Case had Sharon play down the news of Faith getting snockered for the first time not because she didn’t think it wasn’t a big deal, but because it was Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), her ex-husband, Nick’s (Joshua Morrow), on-again girlfriend who told her (thinking that Sharon already knew).
When Sharon realized that Phyllis knew something about Faith that she didn’t, she subtly asked, “You think?” hoping that the redhead would come forth with additional information. Sharon did this without letting on that she’d been in the dark. Fortunately, Phyllis spilled more tea.
But just because Sharon downplayed it didn’t mean that she wasn’t going to deal with this issue – which included firmly taking Nick (Joshua Morrow) to task for not bringing her in on the loop. Sharon drove her point home by reminding Nick that their late daughter Cassie (Camryn Grimes) had died, indirectly, because of alcohol. (Cassie, who didn’t have a driver’s license, attempted to drive an inebriated Daniel home but her inexperience behind the wheel helped caused a horrific accident, which ultimately took her life.)
Ironically, Faith had begged Phyllis not to tell Nick that she’d been drinking, but she had to. Nick, in turn, however, did not tell Sharon (!). Rather than get too wrapped up in being left out of this situation, Sharon focused on the fact that Faith’s actions were serious and there would be a punishment coming.
While Faith learned (we hope!) a valuable lesson by indulging in alcohol, viewers got a more subtle rush – seeing Sharon Case deliver a controlled, but emotional performance as a concerned mother, who will always put her children first. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
