Chelsea thought she had it all figured out on the June 12 episode of The Young and the Restless. Nikki told her the only way to get what she wanted from Victor was to give Victor something he wanted more in return. So Chelsea decided they’d make a trade: Victor would quit picking on poor, defenseless Billy, and Chelsea would tell him who Aristotle Dumas really was. Because Chelsea was so smart, she’d figured out what nobody else could. Except things didn’t go exactly as planned.
What Was
Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) made her offer. Victor (Eric Braeden) chortled smugly and called her bluff. He accused her of thinking that Dumas was Tucker. Chelsea greed.
Victor informed her that it couldn’t be. Tucker was in a prison in India. Oh, Chelsea said. Then she took off. Well. That was counter-productive. And counter-dramatic.

What Could Have Been
What if Victor had toyed with Chelsea a little? What if, instead of reading her mind and blurting out why it couldn’t be, Victor had given Chelsea enough rope to hang herself?
If he’d let her explain exactly why she’d come to her conclusion, then pulled the rug out from under her, it would have still been pointless, but at least it might have been a little bit fun.

What Should Have Been
But if Victor really wanted to call off Chelsea — and if Y&R had really wanted to entertain their viewers — why not have Victor agree with Chelsea? Why not take her and Adam (Mark Grossman) to France, where Victor could have encouraged her to dramatically unmask Dumas?
If Victor is so sure Chelsea’s theory is wrong, he could have stood back and let her make a fool of herself. Which would undermine her credibility with Adam. Which would have made it less likely that Adam would listen to Chelsea over his father when it came to dealing with Billy (Jason Thompson).
What happened to the Victor who always thinks three steps ahead? And brings the drama.
