As previously reported, The Young and the Restless took home best writing for a Daytime Drama at the Writers Guild of America Awards earlier this months. We know now for sure what episodes were submitted that won the team the coveted award.
An Honor For The Young and the Restless
Jaime Camil (Jane the Virgin), star of the upcoming CBS sitcom Broke, presented the award to YR. Scribes Sarah Bibel and Mellinda Hensley were among the writers who attended the ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton and spoke on behalf of the YR team.
“We want to dedicate this award to our cast member, Kristoff St. John [who played Neil],” said Bibel. “The episodes we wrote and submitted were a memorial to him and a tribute to him and the fact that you recognize them makes us think that maybe we did justice to his memory.”
Kristoff St. John, who died one year ago yesterday, played the role of Neil Winters on The Young and the Restless from 1991 until his passing in 2019. The show wrote St. John’s death into the script by having Neil pass away on the evening that Society had its grand opening.
Neil’s loved ones gathered for his funeral. In addition to regular contract players, Shemar Moore, who regarded St. John as his brother and mentor, reprised his role as Malcolm for the solemn occasion. Julia Pace Mitchell (ex-Sofia) and Angell Conwell (ex-Leslie) also appeared in the funeral episode.
“Also, thank you to the WGA for recognizing us, for recognizing daytime,” added Hensley. “All of our scriptwriting team is wonderful…each of them put out 60 pages a week. Also, we can never do what we do without the assistants in the room with us. So, please…fight for their fair pay, fight for their health insurance. They are our future. We should invest in them.”
Soap Hub congratulates YR on its win. YR was created by the late William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
