Today’s classic flashback episode of The Young and the Restless will be from the fall of 1991 when practically the entire cast gathered together for a masquerade/costume ball. Several storylines came together as the citizens of Genoa City interacted with one another.
Kate Linder: Back To Esther’s Roots
Kate Linder (Esther), who recently celebrated her 38th anniversary with YR, appears in the flashback episode and gets to show off her musical talents. While Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) attended the ball as Prince Charming and Katherine Chancellor was the Queen of Hearts, Linder’s Esther went as (what else?) a French maid!
The actress recently did an interview in which she shared her anticipation in watching the episode along with YR’s devoted fan base. “I actually haven’t seen it since it originally aired,” Linder told TV Insider. “I am so looking forward to it.”
The show’s late costumer, Greg York, was in charge of putting all the colorful costumes together. “Greg and everyone in the wardrobe department did an amazing job,” Linder says. “Jill [Jess Walton] was perfect as Cleopatra and Mrs. Chancellor [Jeanne Cooper] was amazing as the Queen of Hearts. I was thrilled that they decided to have Esther, who was still a maid at the time, come to the ball in a French maid outfit.”
Watch for Linder to perform the song Everybody Ought to Have a Maid. “Dean Barlow, an Emmy-winning choreographer, put it all together,” Linder said. “Mike Denney, who directed that episode, came to Dean’s dance studio – where I still take classes — and worked with us so he would know exactly where to place the cameras. It was a labor of love. [The episodes] took days to tape and people were sleeping in their dressing rooms because we went so late, but it was all worth it.”
As YR fans know, Esther retired her maid’s uniform after receiving her inheritance from the late Katherine. “I actually do miss the maid’s outfit because it reminds me of doing scenes with Jeanne,” Linder recalls. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
