Most fans of The Young and the Restless considered Noemi Gonzalez and her portrayal of Rey’s social-climbing wife Mia to be a much-needed force on the Genoa City scene as she made things happen. But it wasn’t always easy for the soap newcomer as she faced blowback from a segment of people on social media who had a lot to say about her personally that wasn’t at all nice.

Noemi Gonzalez Speaks Out

The star, who can be seen in the upcoming Selena The Series on Netflix, was recently given the opportunity by ETOnline to share her thoughts on the Hollywood beauty scene and what she had to do to stay true to her self and reclaim her self esteem in the face of cruel comments on social media.

“A year ago, I was fortunate to book the role of Mia Rosales on the iconic daytime drama The Young and the Restless,” she wrote. “I loved Mia. I would play her again, but only if I time traveled to the ‘80s when there was no social media. Because what I do not miss about portraying Mia is being bashed and ridiculed publicly for not being skinny, manufactured, or white enough for the soap opera demographic.”

Gonzalez was definitely something new for daytime — she was a force of nature. She commanded attention in scenes with veterans from the moment Mia hit the screen and that’s not an easy thing to do. It’s a shame she wasn’t embraced for being a little different — and it’s also a shame that fans would upset an actor to the point that she needed to write this.

“I began to second-guess my self-love, body shape, and what I found to be beautiful about myself. I was shaken. I stayed quiet. I kept my head down, stayed in the work. It was a very challenging time. But I am thankful for the growth, experience, and the fans I have gained who knew I did it all for them.”

Thankfully, the actress did not let such comments discourage her. In addition to the Netflix series she has coming up, she also appeared as Delia in the recently-released film The Tax Collector with Shia LaBeouf.

Hopefully, if she does return to Genoa City one day, her portrayal of the controversial Mia will be appreciated — or at least fans will base any qualms on something other than the actress’s appearance. The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
