Courtney Hope plays Sally Spectra on The Young and the Restless. Before she showed up in Genoa City, Sally was in Los Angeles on The Bold and the Beautiful. The actress recently shared a heartbreaking story of being cut out of a major motion picture.
Cutting Room Floor Heartbreak
Throughout her career, Hope, who said she wanted to act since she was three, has been on many auditions and booked lots of roles. Unfortunately for her, sometimes even after filming, some scenes end up on the cutting room floor, and that’s just what happened to her when she filmed scenes in the popular movie Allegiant, which starred Naomi Watts, Shalene Woody, Octavia Spencer, Ansel Elgort, and so many others.
Hope took to her Instagram live to answer a few questions from fans, and she told the story of how she found out the scene she’d filmed for Allegiant didn’t make it into the movie. “So actually, if you go to the credits of all Allegiant, you will see my name,” she said. “I shot it and I had a scene with Naomi Watts and I got to like, interact with her, and I’ve got to say that was by far, especially to that point and even beyond it really, really gave me a, a different sense of this business and who I was and the, the player that I could be interacting with, with everyone else.
“No one will ever see it because they…scrapped the director, the writer reshot half of it anyway,” continued Hope (who recently opened up about turning her greatest failure into something great). “Me and like six other people that were there ended up not being in it and it was really heartbreaking, but I will forever hold that experience close to me. That entire crew. They were amazing. Atlanta [where it was shot] was amazing. I felt amazing having this scene with Naomi.”
Later, somebody asked Hope how she found out she wasn’t in the movie, and she said, “It was really sad…. I’m thinking this is career-changing. Like my career is gonna take off.
“I was in what they called the beehive,” she continued, explaining the scene she’d filmed for Allegiant. “So it was like me, there was four other people in there. And then right next to us, so like there was just a wall and we were all on the same scene was Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Shailene Woodley and I think Ansel Elgort was in there.
“But then down below was Theo James and Naomi Watts, and I was representing the Factionless, and we were interacting and having this banter back and forth with Naomi,” Hope explained. “Anyway, so I was so excited. I came home. I was like, ‘this is it.’ I was so excited, and my friend worked for Lions Gate for publicity, and she had been seeing some of the movies and she called me and she was like, ‘I’m gonna be honest, like, I don’t see you in it.'”
When the movie came out, Hope and her mother went to the movie theater to watch it, and when a character who was in the scene she’d shot, died, she realized her scene had hit the cutting room floor. Despite that, when the film was over, she saw her name listed in the credits.
“It was so heartbreaking,” she said. “But, that’s the industry…. I know it’s happened to so many people. You end up on the cutting room floor. But it was so sad. I was so excited. I love those movies.”
