The Young and the Restless fan favorite Shemar Moore saw his beloved series S.W.A.T. cancelled, but in a twist, a spinoff of the show is coming, with his character of Hondo being front and center again. Sony Pictures Television is expanding the S.W.A.T. universe with a new spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles.
Back In Action
Shemar Moore will return as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, reprising his iconic role. The upcoming series will also retain the original show’s 200-person production crew, ensuring job continuity as filming begins this summer in Los Angeles.
No word has been released on whether any of his former S.W.A.T. co-stars will follow him to the spin-off. The studio aims to produce and distribute the 10-episode series worldwide by securing the ideal platforms and partners to connect these new stories with S.W.A.T.’s loyal fanbase while also drawing in a fresh audience.
After CBS canceled S.W.A.T. in May 2023, the network quickly backtracked, announcing days later that the show would return for a seventh and final season. But in a surprising twist, CBS renewed the series again in May 2024—this time for an eighth season.
Behind the scenes, lead studio Sony Pictures Television played a pivotal role, securing back-to-back last-minute renewals by striking financially favorable deals with the network over the past two years. S.W.A.T. completed its eight-season run on CBS with a two-hour finale on May 16.
