Phyllis and Kyle: The Romantic Twist Young and Restless Needs

On the July 30 episode of The Young and the Restless, Kyle and Jack had a knockdown, drag-out war of words about Jabot, and he’s on a destructive path. Meanwhile, Phyllis thinks of herself, first and foremost, as a great mom. (She also thinks of herself as a genius and the most morally upright person in town, so her judgment is…suspect.)

We believe that she loves her kids. As a concept. We’re just not sure she’d ever be able to put their needs ahead of her own. This is why we have no trouble believing that if Phyllis wanted to have an affair with Kyle, then Phyllis would have an affair with Kyle. Here are three reasons why this is exactly the plot twist YR desperately needs.

Turnabout Is Fair Play

When Phyllis (Michelle Stafford — who had a wild encounter) faked her death earlier, she did it for Summer (Allison Lanier) and Daniel. So they would see what a horrible person Diane (Susan Walters) was. Oh, and for Jack (Peter Bergman), too. Phyllis really needed the people she cared about to know that Diane was evil. It didn’t quite work the way Phyllis wanted.

So, she needs a new plan to needle her rival. Do you know what would really bug Diane? If Phyllis had an affair with Diane’s son, Kyle (Michael Mealor). Yeah, that would show Diane! (Plus, it would remind all of Genoa City that Phyllis is a hot, desirable woman who can totes have any man she wants, even one who used to be her son-in-law. Not that Phyllis doubts that anyone already knows that.)

Mommy Issues

As for why Kyle would have an affair with Diane, well, to start with, He’s an idiot. He thinks he makes his own decisions, but everything he has done since returning to Genoa City has been manipulated by someone else.

Phyllis will make Kyle believe that their sleeping together is his idea- – so he can show Summer whose boss! Yeah! But, in reality, Phyllis will simply be messing with Kyle’s mommy issues. Of which he has… more than he’ll ever admit.

Happy Days Are Here Again

But the real reason for a Phyllis and Kyle pairing is to bring on the drama — something Y&R has been sorely lacking lately. Summer will explode. Jack will explode. Diane will explode. Phyllis will taunt and Kyle will…look confused. In other words, something soapy will happen. Which is really all we want from a soap opera.
