The Young and the Restless star Peter Bergman is looking back on the special episode that earned him his 25th Daytime Emmy Award nomination. It was the standalone episode focusing on Jack and Nikki that had the lasting repercussions on the CBS soap.
Key Takeaways
- Bergman was up for the challenge.
- The actor is flattered to be nominated for another Daytime Emmy Award.
- Nikki and Jack’s episode initially shocked Bergman.
Looking Back On The Special Y&R Episode
The footage Bergman submitted for the Daytime Emmys this year was from the episode in which Jack and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) were in the hotel room. Jack was trying to help Nikki stay sober, but things went awry when he broke his own sobriety to save her.
Speaking with Today, Bergman admitted that he was “dumbstruck” when he learned about the episode, especially since he really wasn’t given much prep time.
“I was a little thrown by it all, I definitely was. And then I read it, and it was pretty clever,” the actor stated.
The episode focusing on alcoholism was challenging for Bergman because he lost a close friend to alcohol addiction years ago.
“I always wondered, ‘Could I have helped him? Could I have done more to help him?’ And Jack was not going to have that feeling. ‘Could I have done more to help Nikki?’ There is no limit to what Jack was going to do to help Nikki,” he expressed.
Bergman and Scott hit it out of the park with the episode, which was filmed over two days. It was one of the most challenging and difficult things Bergman has ever filmed, but he’s also vastly proud of how it turned out.
25th Daytime Emmy Award Nomination
In a week, Bergman will join other soap stars to see who takes home the Daytime Emmy for their hard work in 2024. The episode with Jack and Nikki is even more special for him because it earned Bergman his 25th Daytime Emmy nod.
“It never gets old. It just doesn’t. There’s something nice about the people in my industry saying, ‘Oh yeah, he’s one of the good ones,’” Bergman shared.
The nomination was bittersweet for him, though, because Scott did not get a nomination. It was a joint effort for Bergman and Scott in that episode, and he thought she deserved one for her work, too.
Bergman has won three Daytime Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Jack on Y&R. The last time he won was in 2002.
This year, he’s up against General Hospital’s Dominic Zamprogna (Dante) and Days of our Lives stars Eric Martsolf (Brady), Greg Rikaart (Leo), and Paul Telfer (Xander) in the Lead Actor category.
The 52nd Daytime Emmy Awards are taking place on Friday, October 17.
