No one has ever accused Victor Newman of being of sound mind on The Young and the Restless. Well, outside of Victor. Everyone who has ever crossed paths with the mumbling mustache has walked away asking themselves, “What the $%&@ is wrong with Victor?”

The Great Victor Newman (We Know And Love)

Cole (J. Eddie Peck) and Michael (Christian Le Blanc) are scratching their heads as we speak, wondering how it is that they broke the law in order to protect Victor (Eric Braeden)…and he’s accusing them of betrayal. Does the man know what words mean? Does he even believe in what he is saying? The answer is no and yes. As for why that would be, well, it’s because Victor suffers from mental health issues. Which one? Pretty much all of them. Let’s plot him on the couch for a diagnosis…or twelve.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Symptoms: Have an unreasonably high sense of self-importance and require constant, excessive admiration; Feel that they deserve privileges and special treatment; Expect to be recognized as superior; Believe they are superior to others and can only spend time with or be understood by equally special people; Be critical of and look down on people they feel are not important; Expect special favors and expect other people to do what they want without questioning them; Take advantage of others to get what they want; Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of other; Behave in an arrogant way.

Diagnosis: Yes, Victor definitely has that.

Borderline Personality Disorder

Symptoms: Inappropriate, intense anger or problems controlling anger; Fear of abandonment; Intense, yet unstable relationships.

Diagnosis: Yes, Victor definitely has that.

Histrionic Personality Disorder

Symptoms: Characterized by a pervasive pattern of attention-seeking behaviors and a theatrical level of emotional reactions.

Diagnosis: Yes, Victor definitely has that.

Main Character Syndrome

Symptoms: Attention-seeking or dramatic behaviors, like being loud in public; Overdramatizing life events, either to come out looking like a hero or a victim; Inflated sense of self, or feeling like you’re better than other people; Lack of empathy for others’ struggles: Viewing everything that happens around you through the lens of how it affects you and your life; High level of outward confidence, which may or may not hide underlying insecurities; Centering yourself in every situation or conversation; Romanticizing experiences or relationships; Feeling the need to outshine others to stay in the spotlight.

Diagnosis: Are you new here? Of course, Victor definitely has that! (He literally IS a main character, after all.

Treatment

Well, we could hope for Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), Victoria (Amelia Heinle), Nicholas (Joshua Morrow), Adam (Mark Grossman), Jack (Peter Bergman), Cole, and Michael to call him out on his decades of psychotic behavior, demand that he cut it out or suffer the consequences. But since they haven’t done it up to now, it’s hard to imagine they’ll suddenly start now.

Besides, once Victor finds out his bullying behavior has a medical name, he’ll likely call out anyone who tries to express how his callous treatment makes them feel for being ableist and bullying an innocent victim like poor put upon him. There is nothing wrong with the way Victor acts. He can’t help it. He’s right, and you’re wrong. You got that?
