Joshua Morrow continues to amaze fans with Nick’s addiction storyline on The Young and the Restless. There’s been many emotional scenes as Nick realizes he’s spiraling out of control. But one scene with Eric Braeden took a lot out of Morrow.

Key Takeaways

  • Nick became addicted to painkillers after sustaining an injury in a car crash.
  • For months, Nick kept his addiction a secret until his collapse in Vegas forced him to face the truth.
  • Nick’s admission to Victor was one of Morrow’s toughest scenes.

‘Brutal and Heartbreaking’

Nick’s life has been thrown for a loop since Matt’s (Roger Howarth) return. One pivotal moment between the two men occurred when Matt caused Nick to crash his car. As a result of the wreck, Nick sustained a leg injury, which kick-started his painkiller addiction.

Nick began popping the pills to cope with his pain. Although he tried to keep his addiction a secret, his erratic behavior caused concern for his family. Nick thought he had everything under control, but his collapse in Las Vegas proved otherwise.

Upon his return to Genoa City, Nick realized he needed help. His first step was to admit his addiction to his family. One poignant moment was Nick confessing to his father, Victor (Braeden).

The scene was not only emotional for fans, but also for Morrow. “It was brutal for me as an actor because all I could think about was me having to tell my own dad,” he told TV Insider.

“I couldn’t not cry in the rehearsal because Eric is like my father. Having to say those things to him, to see the look of disappointment on his face, it was just heartbreaking to me, and he was brilliant in the scenes,” Morrow shared.

Getting Help

Nick put off getting help for his addiction until he settled one last piece of business, capturing Matt. Thanks to Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), the Newmans finally got their man. However, during the showdown with an amnesiac Matt, Nick collapsed.

Things looked dire for Nick, but in a surprising twist, Matt saved his life. In the aftermath, Victor decided to handle Matt himself and ordered Nick to finally get the help he needed.

Nick decided to take his father’s advice and attended a support group with Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott). Nikki’s faced her own battles with addiction and knows what her son’s going through. She’ll be there every step of the way as he faces his demons.

With his family’s support and a determined attitude, Nick is ready to kick his addiction. But as Nikki knows, the road to recovery isn’t going to be easy. However, if anyone can do it, Nick can.
