Hollywood Legend and Soap Alum Cicely Tyson Dead at 96

Actress Cicely Tyson has passed away at the age of 96. The accomplished Oscar-nominated actress won a Tony Award in 2013 and two Emmys over the course of her accomplished career, which included an early role on Guiding Light.

The actress’s autobiography, Just as I Am: A Memoir was just released two days ago. Tyson’s manager, Larry Thompson, spoke for the family when he announced her passing.

“With heavy heart, the family of Miss Cicely Tyson announces her peaceful transition this afternoon. At this time, please allow the family their privacy,” read a statement issued by Thompson.

Tyson won not one, but two Emmys in 1974 for her performance in the title role of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. She took home gold in the categories of Best Lead Actress in a Drama and Actress of the Year – Special.

Tyson’s numerous other credits include appearing on Guiding Light in 1966. She played the role of Martha Frazier.

At press time, actress Viola Davis, who played Tyson’s daughter Annalise Keating on How To Get Away With Murder, had not commented on Tyson’s death. Tyson played the role of Ophelia Harkness on the ABC legal drama. Davis did recently tweet that she was looking forward to reading Tyson’s memoir.

“Congratulations to the incomparable Miss @IAmCicelyTyson on the publication of her new book, Just as I Am!” Davis posted on social media. “This memoir details her storied six-decade career on and off the screen. I can’t wait to read and be inspired! #JustAsIAm #CicelyTyson.”

In 2018, Tyson received an honorary Oscar at the annual Governors Awards. “This is a culmination of all those years of haves and have nots,” she said. Another memorable accolade was the 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the nation’s highest civilian honor. “Cicely’s convictions and grace have helped for us to see the dignity of every single beautiful memory of the American family,” said President Barack Obama.

Tyson won the Tony for her role in the revival of Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful. She later reprised her award-winning role for a Lifetime Television movie.

Over the course of her career, Tyson appeared in a recurring role or as a series regular on many TV series, including Sweet Justice as strong-willed Carrie Grace Battle. She had guest spots on Emergency!, B.L. Stryker, Roots, and The Outer Limits.

Tyson was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on August 21, 1997. From 1981-88, Tyson was wed to jazz musician Miles Davis, who died in 1991. Soap Hub sends condolences to Tyson’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.
