Fan favorite Joshua Morrow takes whatever Young and the Restless hands his character, Nick Newman, to play and hits it out of the park. The actor recently spoke openly about why playing Nick, which he’s done for 30 years, doesn’t even feel like acting.
Morrow, who spoke to Soap Hub about his 30th anniversary on Y&R, was, starting in 1996, nominated for 5 consecutive Daytime Emmys — all for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series, a category that has since been retired.
The actor especially shines in storylines that involved his children. Where was his nom for playing Nick’s anguish and aftermath when Cassie (Camryn Grimes) died? Another notable performance came more recently when Nick raged at his father, Victor (Eric Braeden), when he wanted to take custody of Nick’s son Christian.
Despite this, or perhaps because of it, Morrow says he doesn’t really feel like he’s acting when he plays Nick. He told Soaps that no matter what happens in the Newman family, it’s Nick’s role to help straighten things out — not to be the ruthless business guy his dad can often be.
“He’s just the dude that is like, ‘All right, you guys act crazy and then I’m going to clean it up and I’ll take care of everything for you,'” Morrow said. “Nick’s loyalty to his family and friends might find him at odds with his father, and yes, his, sometimes impulsive, decisions get him in trouble, but he’s just trying to do right by everyone.”
Easy-going Morrow feels that Y&R has tapped into his real-life personality in many regards. The show has “allowed Nick and Joshua to be one at this point. I really don’t feel like I’m acting.”
Recently, Morrow’s son, Crew Morrow, joined the cast of Bold and the Beautiful as Will Spencer, son of Katie (Heather Tom) and Bill (Don Diamont).
