Everyone has their favorite iconic scene from The Young and the Restless. There’s the still-alive Victor spinning around in his chair for the big reveal. There is Traci dumping a sundae over bully Lauren’s head. There’s Brad in a cage, David getting squashed in a trash compactor, Jack walking out on a heart-stricken Victor, and Jill and Kay’s attic catfight. Yeah. It’s been a while since we’ve had one of those. But that wait finally came to an end this week during the Tuesday, March 12 episode. And it’s appropriate that two daytime vets were right at the center of it.
Visiting Expert
Jordan (Colleen Zenk, who you can read more about here.) may be relatively new to Genoa City — did Eve (Margaret Mason) so much as mention that she had a sister? (And speaking about iconic scenes, how about stroke victim Eve desperately writing S-I-S to try to let her son know that he’d fallen in love with his sister? That was Cole [J. Eddie Peck] and Victoria [then-Heather Tom]. And they weren’t siblings.)
But Zenk has been a daytime stalwart since 1978 when she first began playing Barbara Ryan on As the World Turns. She remained in the role until the show’s last episode, on September 17, 2010. The point is, this is no newbie. This is soap opera royalty, which was just what this Y&R story called for.
Dazed and Confused
Victor (Eric Braeden) had a fuzzy plan to smoke out (see what we did there?) Jordan for several days now. We didn’t understand it. As far as we could piece together, it was something about Claire (Hayley Erin) pretending to move into Victoria’s (Amelia Heinle) house but actually living at the ranch. Jordan burned down Victoria’s house, which did little to bring Jordan out of hiding.
Zap Went the Strings of My Heart
Then Victor went to meet Jordan in a dark alley, and he allowed her to take him hostage. “Okay,” we said.” That’s…a choice.” Except we didn’t know Victor had yet another plan. (Victor would be so disappointed by our lack of faith in him.) He was in cahoots with Nick (Joshua Morrow). To sneak up on Jordan and give her a very colorful zap to the neck.
And with that fizz heard ’round the world, Y&R reminded us of the soap it used to be. Of the soap it still could be. Of the soap that, for a very brief moment, it actually was…. Kudos to Braeden, to Morrow, to Zenk, and, most importantly, The Daytime Emmy for Best Prop goes to.
Plus…at the end of the Wednesday, March 13 episode, Jordan was in the dungeon-like room she had planned for Victor. She yelled, “Damn you, Victor Newman!!” And Victor leaving her there (while potentially a stupid move) reminded us of some of his previous ruthless moves.
