Twenty-five years ago this month, Nick and Sharon became husband and wife on The Young and the Restless! And while the two star-crossed lovers have long since split and have moved on with others — Nick’s dating Phyllis and Sharon has married Rey — the “Shick” love story and wedding is one that YR fans will never forget!
It’s a testament to Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Sharon’s (Sharon Case) enduring love that their wedding is still so fondly recalled. The couple had been together on-screen for less than two years when they tied the knot, but Nick and Sharon went through tons of drama between their first meeting and when they were married.
For starters, the two came from different backgrounds, as Sharon and her mother Doris (Karen Hensel) struggled to make ends meet and Nick’s family — the Newmans — were incredibly wealthy. Plus, Nick’s mother Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) was not a fan of Sharon’s!
Things were far worse when Nick’s rival Matt Clark (Eddie Cibrian) raped Sharon. Later, Nick was arrested and convicted for Matt’s attempted murder after he’d been shot. In prison, Nick had to fight for his life against fellow convicts including Larry Warton (David ‘Shark’ Fralick) to stay alive.
Victor was relentless in proving his son’s innocence. It was revealed that Amy (Julianne Morris) shot Matt after he’d attacked her. Victor and the authorities went to the prison where Nick was serving his sentence, and Victor beat the stuffing out of Larry. Nick was freed and the wedding was on!
Nikki was miffed that the ceremony was being held at a small chapel and not a big church (and that her son was getting married at all). But Victoria (then, Heather Tom; now Amelia Heinle) reminded her mother that this was Sharon and Nick’s day. Amy, Doris, and a handful of family and friends attended the ceremony.
Back in the day, Nick and Sharon were synonymous with romance. Before romantic vows and rings were exchanged, Nick and Sharon were on the phone with each other, professing their love for one another.
“I can’t wait for you to become Mrs. Nicholas Newman,” Nick said. “I love you and I’m going to spend the rest of my life making you happy.” Sharon replied: “You have already made me happier than I ever dreamed was possible.”
When the wedding officiator said “those whom God has joined together let no one put asunder” the camera cut to, of course, Nikki. (THAT’s a soap opera moment, folks!) And while Nikki didn’t break the couple up, other forces and fate, alas, ended up driving the two apart. The couple faced a devastating loss when their daughter Cassie (Camryn Grimes) died following injuries she sustained in a car accident.
In his grief, Nick went on to have an affair with Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) and have a child, Summer (Hunter King), with her. While Nick and Sharon reconciled on more than one occasion, both making it to the altar again and producing another daughter of their own, Faith (Alyvia Alyn Lind), today, they are living separate lives instead of celebrating their silver anniversary.
Still, Soap Hub couldn’t let this momentous anniversary pass without it being acknowledged! The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for airtimes.
