There’s been nothing but mess since Cane arrived back on the scene in The Young and the Restless. The man has never met a feather he couldn’t ruffle or a hackle that refused to rise over his shenanigans. The Aristotle Dumas plot is but the latest scheme of his that’s rightfully angered Genoa City’s elite.

But according to Billy Flynn, Cane may have a Big Bad Business Man agenda, but his true aim is to win his family back. He’s just bungled his attempt to do s,o which will make this task even more difficult.

Cane Wants Lily And His Kids

In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Flynn detailed Cane’s motivations, which are rooted in his love for Lily (Christel Khalil). While Cane certainly wants to disrupt the status quo and showcase he’s a major player in business, Flynn shared, “I think ultimately, Lily is more important. But until he feels like he’s enough, I would say that there are going to be things that get in the way of her feeling that she’s the most important. There’s a plan, and I think in his mind, it all just has to work — but I think she is the ultimate thing that is important to him.”

Why wouldn’t Cane feel like he’s enough? Aside from the ways he’s hurt Lily over the years, like when he made her believe she was talking to his ghost, he carries a lot of baggage. His family ran a crime syndicate. And, though his father Colin (Tristan Rogers) turned over a new leaf before he died, Cane knows there’s a lot to make amends for.

The trouble is that Lily and their children would have been happy to have him back without all of the games. Now, Cane’s plotting could jeopardize his ultimate goal.

Flynn laughed when he spoke about how needlessly complicated Cane has made the situation. “I don’t know what he was expecting. Maybe a warmer welcome, I think. Multiple people have been like, ‘What were you expecting, a parade?’ I think in his mind, he thought that people were going to be more impressed by this thing that he had accomplished.”

Besides winning at duplicity, Cane has amassed a lot of wealth, influence, and power in his absence from Lily, Mattie, and Charlie’s lives. He sees himself as not coming back empty-handed, that he’s able to offer them real value. But, as Flynn put it, his family’s perspective is “Yeah, but you lied to us. So who cares about all that other stuff?” They needed him, and he wasn’t there. That’s what they care about.

Will Lily And Cane Get Back Together?

There does seem to be an on-ramp for a path toward a reunion between Cane and Lily. However, they’re going to be met with obstacles. Mainly, Cane is getting in his own way. Flynn acknowledged that Lily is telling her ex-husband exactly what she needs, but he’s not hearing her. As such, he’s on the wrong foot and they’re not off to a great start.

But there is a chance for a change of course. Flynn teased, “It becomes a big quest for him to make things right. There’s some stuff building to where you’ll see his efforts to try to make things right.”

‘Try’ is the operative word here. Cane is also seeking to be a thorn in his rivals’ sides. With him working to put the competition on edge, he may not immediately see how over-prioritizing business could push him further away from Lily and the kids.
