On the June 6 episode of The Young and the Restless, Alan hypnotized Ashley to help her remember what happened to her after her fight with Tucker in Paris. Things got wild, though, by the end of the episode, and it looked like Alan’s twin brother, Martin, somehow took his place, but did he really?
For months, viewers were treated to Ashley (Eileen Davidson) insisting that Tucker (Trevor St. John) was threatening and abusive, while Tucker yelled back that he wasn’t. Finally, Tucker’s version of events was confirmed, and we moved on to listening to the voices in Ashley’s head squabble.
Her psychiatrist friend flew in special from Paris and declared that the alters were protecting Ashley, but from what? From him, it looks like. Or, rather, from his twin brother, Martin. But is that what’s really going on?
While Tucker was also in Paris, he ran into Alan (Christopher Cousins). Or, at least, he thought he ran into Alan. Alan claims it was his mentally ill twin. Once Alan and Ashley compared notes, they realized that Ashley’s psychotic breakdown seemed to have taken place after she spent an evening with Martin — thinking he was Alan. When Ashley was hypnotized, she had memories of the man she thought was Alan, but who is supposedly Martin, encouraging her to take back the power after the incident with Tucker.
Ashley doesn’t remember every single bit of what she and Martin talked about. She and Traci (Beth Maitland) also wondered why her alters weren’t trying to protect her from Alan, if Ashley thinking Alan was a threat is what made her splinter in the first place. Could it be because Ashley’s alter connected with Martin, knowing he wasn’t Alan? Or could it be both simpler and more complicated? Could it be that Ashley knows Alan isn’t a threat because the real threat is Martin…who is Alan’s alter?
Like recognizes like, right? Game recognizes game? What if when Martin walked into that bar where he set up the meeting with Ashley, Ashley recognized right away that he wasn’t her friend — he was a different side of her friend. And realizing that she was seeing a different personality of a person she knew triggered an alternative personality in Ashley.
The two instantly connected and proceeded to plan how they would destroy Ashley and Alan and live happily ever after. Now, the alter is baiting Alan with information Martin passed on to her that he knew would drive Alan away. It’s obviously starting to work. Tucker ran into him. Alan thinks he is treating Ashley and the rest of her brood. But, in reality, it’s Ashley’s alters who are playing Alan until they get rid of him — and Ashley — for good.
