Soaps are reportedly looking at getting back to work soon, with The Bold and the Beautiful already returning, The Young and the Restless doing so next month and General Hospital and Days of our Lives sure to follow. That means the shows are going to start telling stories again! One actress on one of the shows, Brytni Sarpy, who plays Dr. Elena Dawson on YR, would embrace tackling a Black Lives Matter story.

Brytni Sarpy – A Story To Tell

“I would be honored beyond measure to tackle a story as poignant and important as dissecting and understanding the Black Lives Matters movement, and reflecting on and working to resolve the racial injustices my Brothers and Sisters have suffered through in our country,” Sarpy told CBS Watch. The actress used to play cop Valerie Spencer on General Hospital.

“A storyline like this could help reach viewers who do not relate or understand the plight of the Black Man and Black Woman in America.

“Tackling this issue on a show as loved as YR [is] would allow those viewers a chance to open themselves up enough to gain perspective and empathy from a show and a character they have learned to trust and love,” the actress continues. “It can also help heal a lot of pain from those who have suffered and are suffering, to see situations they are overcoming, being both discussed and highlighted. This is what art is meant to do, give us a chance to process our emotions, heal us, it is our therapy.”

While her role as a cop on GH would have lent itself easily to dealing with this kind of story, YR isn’t as clear cut. Elena is a doctor and in a relationship with businessman Devon (Bryton James). But YR would have options as to where to set a Black Lives Matter story. Elena herself could be directly affected or perhaps a patient of hers could be used to help tell the tale.

YR has told numerous social issue stories over the years, taking on such topics as breast cancer, AIDS, alcoholism, and others. At best, those tales both entertain and educate.

First, though, YR needs to return to work, as does the rest of daytime. Currently, only sister serial The Bold and the Beautiful has returned to shooting and is making sure all the safety protocols are in place so that taping can fully resume.
