Let’s be honest, soap operas aren’t exactly know for their diversity of characters, and The Young and the Restless (YR) isn’t much different.
It may have more African-American characters than the average daytime drama, but they’re all kind of the same. Nice. Polite. Bland. Not very interesting.
That’s why YR’s Hilary, as played by Mishael Morgan, was such a breath of fresh air. She wasn’t nice. She wasn’t polite. She definitely wasn’t bland and she is certainly interesting.
Love her, hate her, or love to hate her, Hilary could not be ignored. But now Morgan is leaving Genoa City. Should Hilary go with her, or do we need a recast to keep the momentum that is Hurricane Hilary going? Here’s how almost 8,000 viewers feel:
Keep Away
You know who made Hilary not nice, not polite, not bland, and not boring? Mishael Morgan, that’s who! She knew how to perfectly walk that fine line between unrepentant bitch and vulnerable, needy heroine.
You could hate her for cheating on Neil (Kristoff St. John), torturing Mariah (Camryn Grimes), and manipulating Devon (Bryton James), but, at the same time, you could see why Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) was devoted to her BFF, and why Shauna would see Hilary like a loving mentor.
Sure, the writing was there, but Morgan sold it. And 53% of you just don’t believe anyone else could do as good of a job in the role.
Recast Nation
Jack (Peter Bergman) is a recast. Sharon (Sharon Case) is a recast. So is Jill (Jess Walton) So is Phyllis. So are Victoria (Amelia Heinle) and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott). Recasts can be great and just as beloved, 46% of the audience reminds, and you don’t think Mishael Morgan is irreplaceable.
Devon just swept Hilary off on a babymoon. Who knows? She might return a brand-new woman!
The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
