Most Challenging Y&R Storyline
During her appearance on Soapy with Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart, Egan recalled her most challenging storyline to date.
“I was honored to tell that story that was a few years ago. Josh Griffith wanted to tell a story about mental health, and the writers wrote it so well, and I was just so lucky to tell it where Chelsea was struggling with depression, anxiety, and she almost killed herself, and Billy [Jason Thompson] saves her on a roof,” Egan explained.
Before moving forward with the storyline, the show enlisted the help of mental health professionals to ensure that it was written with respect.
“In almost 20 years, I’ve never gotten such a big fan reaction,” Egan said. “It was so touching and so moving. You could tell how many people were hurting.”
Egan revealed that she received mail from fans who didn’t realize they had the same struggles as Chelsea.
Or, others witnessed their friends and loved ones go through something similar. Even though it was her most challenging storyline, it made a positive impact on the viewers.
Chelsea’s Emotional Mental Health Storyline
The storyline took place in 2022-2023 when Chelsea experienced anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. There was a moment when she stood on the ledge of a hotel balcony, and Billy had to talk her down.
At the time, Chelsea felt the pressure, isolation, and loneliness of not belonging in Genoa City. She reached a point where she felt she didn’t deserve happiness. Billy played a crucial role in saving Chelsea’s life by talking her off the ledge of that building and offering her support.
Following that moment, Chelsea worked on her mental health and got professional help. That heavy episode focused on the reality of mental health issues. It also helped viewers realize they’re not alone and to reach out for help.
