Kidding Around: Should The Young and the Restless Feature More Children?

Politicians love to give lip-service to children being the future, but on soaps, including The Young and the Restless, the children of today are the leading men and ladies of the future.

Watching a character grow up on screen, whether they’re played by one actor, like Camryn Grimes (Cassie and Mariah), or several, like when Victoria went from blonde moppet Ashley Nicole Milan, to brunette teen, Heather Tom, to wife, mother, and business maven Amelia Heinle, makes viewers care much more than some newbies no one ever saw before.

Yes, please, 68% of the audience is ready for this. Kids are major drivers of the story! You want to see Faith (Alyvia Alyn Lind) deal with Sharon (Sharon Case) moving yet another man into their home.

You’re curious about Cane (Daniel Goddard) playing single dad to little Sam. And all Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Adam (Mark Grossman) can talk about is Christian, Christian, Christian. Let’s see how attached he is to Nick. Let’s see how scared he is of Adam. Don’t tell, show!

Faith might be precocious, but her adoration of Victor and periodic whining to Sharon and Nick about their latest screw up (not that these two aren’t constantly screwing up, Faith isn’t wrong) is not a story. It’s an impediment to story.
