On the eve of his 30th anniversary playing Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless, Peter Bergman has been reflecting on his time in Genoa City. The three-time Daytime Emmy-winning actor likely knows so much about soaps it wouldn’t be surprising to someday see him take a behind the scenes role on a show.
He wouldn’t be the first actor to turn to duties behind the camera. Actors from All My Children, where Bergman got his soap start as Cliff, including Francesca James (ex-Kitty/Kelly) and Ellen Wheeler (ex-Cindy/Karen), began their careers as actors, won Emmys for their roles, and then turned to producing and directing. In which arena could Bergman possibly see himself?
“In today’s environment,” Peter Bergman recently shared with TV Insider, “I’d probably want to be a producer more than a director [in daytime]. So much is asked of our directors. They doing everything except what they may want to most – working with actors.
“They have to think about cameras, sets, lighting, sound, and keeping the day moving. Sitting and talking with actors about what we need to accomplish is something I adore. The ability to help those people would be fun. Some people don’t want help and I try to be sensitive to that.”
First, though, Bergman has many more stories to tell as Jack. Viewers have seen him recently embrace his nephew, Theo (Tyler Johnson), courtesy of Dina’s (Marla Adams) fling with Stuart Brooks (Robert Colbert) that was recently brought to light.
And, speaking of Dina, Jack’s still dealing with abandonment issues since Dina walked out on the Abbott clan was Jack was a mere teenager.
“[Dina’s] leaving left Jack to look after his sisters [Ashley, Eileen Davidson, and Traci, Beth Maitland], his father [John, Jerry Douglas]…he had to become an adult. Every woman that Jack has been with has paid for Dina’s sins.”
Don’t miss Monday’s episode, which is a Jack-centric show in honor of Bergman’s 30 decades in Genoa City. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
