Elizabeth Sung, best known to fans of The Young and the Restless as Luan Violen Abbott, has passed away at age 63.
The actress was born and raised in Hong Kong and held a BFA in Dance from The Julliard School.
In 1994, Y&R cast her as Luan , the owner of The Saigon Shack, a restaurant frequented by Christine Blair (Lauralee Bell).
After Luan was injured in a robbery, Christine and Paul (Doug Davidson) went to Vietnam to track down Luan’s son, Keemo, who had been fathered by Jack Abbott.
After Luan recovered, she and Jack reunited and were married. Alas, their happiness was short-lived when Luan died suddenly in 1996.
While at Y&R, Violen made her directing debut with the 1995 film titled Requiem. In 1998, she directed The Water Ghost, her graduate thesis film, which earned her and MFA in directing from the American Film Institute.
During her acting career, Sung amassed nearly 100 performing credits. After Y&R, she continued to work regularly. In 2000, she appeared on Passions as Danielle Dwyer, a book publishing representative.
Her other credits include NYPD Blue, Desperate Housewives, Elementary, and The Night Shift. Prior to joining Y&R, Sung appeared in the film The Joy Luck Club.
One of Sung’s final works is a role in the film For Izzy, which tells the tale of recovering addict and her single mother whose lives are changed forever when they move in next door to a widowed father and his adult daughter with autism.
Soap Hub sends its sincerest condolences to Sung’s friends and family.
