Sports figures have been hooked on soaps for decades as they often have a few hours free during the day. Among the athletes who love The Young and the Restless (YR) is former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Drew Pearson.
The ex-NFL player recently tweeted his admiration for Y&R’s recent abuse storyline, featuring stellar work by Thad Luckinbill (J.T.) and Amelia Heinle (Victoria).
Pearson also gave kudos to Executive Producer and Head Writer Mal Young for his execution of this important tale.
A fan responded to Pearson’s tweet by urging CBS Daytime to give Pearson a walk-on role on the top-rated show!
Young thinks the idea is smashing and tweeted that Pearson is indeed on his way to Genoa City!
Pearson is joining a list of other sports figures who’ve appeared on the top-rated soap. They include hockey great Wayne Gretzky, who played “Wayne” (who else?) in a scene with Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) in 1984.
In 2006, Y&R made good use of its basketball court set when then-Los Angeles Laker Luke Walton stopped by to shoot some hoops with Neil (Kristoff St. John).
When Jack (Peter Bergman) was running for the Wisconsin state senate in 2007, three members of the Milwaukee Brewers — Jeff Suppan, Bill Hall, J.J. Hardy and Chris Capuano — appeared on-air as themselves to pose for a photo with the budding politician.
Other professional athletes who’ve been on Y&R include David Justice in 1992, boxing legend Muhammad Ali in 1999, figure skater Tara Lipinski also in 1999, and NFL stars Robert Griffith, Charles Woodson, and Tony Dorsett.
Soap Hub will update you when the soap lets us know what brings Pearson to Genoa City.
The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for airtimes.
