Doug Davidson has been acting for decades, but the soap star is currently best known for playing Paul Williams on The Young and the Restless. In fact, he started playing the future Genoa City police chief back in 1978.

From where he was raised to his legendary acting mentor/castmate, here are five fast facts you need to know about longtime The Young and the Restless star, Doug Davidson.

In The Beginning
Davidson was born in Glendale, California on October 24, which is also where he was raised. The native Californian ended up studying marine biology at Occidental College in Los Angeles before deciding to pursue acting full time.

Game Show Vet
Davidson has appeared on more episodes of Family Feud than anyone in history, besides the hosts, of course. Davidson started appearing on the show as the captain of the YR team when they would appear for charity. It was because of this that he ended up hosting The New Price Is Right, which ran for a year.

Dream Come True
While in college, Davidson was a massive fan of YR. He was especially a fan of Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor), whom he later starred alongside when he got on the show in 1978. Cooper became Davidson’s mentor once he got on the show. They ended up working together until her death in 2013.

Interesting Hobbies
Along with acting, Davidson stays busy off-camera sailing, scuba diving, and water skiing. His character Paul isn’t the only tough one — Davidson has a brown belt in karate.

Getting Personal
Davidson has been married to former YR star Cindy Fisher (ex-Rebecca/Dana) since 1984 and they have two children, Calyssa and Caden. He calls former General Hospital star (and rocker) Rick Springfield his best friend.

But Springfield isn’t the only one with some musical talent — Davidson can play the bagpipes! The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
