Marla Adams has been turning in one poignant performance after the next as Dina Mergeron faces the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease on The Young and the Restless. One day, she breaks your heart; the next, she’s almost has you chuckling as Dina fires off zingers!
So how do viewers feel about Dina? Does she have your sympathy or admiration — or both? Soap Hub asked Y&R fans to weigh in. Read on to get the results!
Poor Dina
The majority of you, a little over 88%, feel sorry for Dina. And why not? She chose to estrange herself from her family for years and now that she’s ready to reconnect with them, she’s lost the mental facilities to truly enjoy her time with her kids.
Fortunately, there are moments of clarity so that Dina’s been able to talk to Ashley (Eileen Davidson) about a time when they went ice-skating. Alas, Dina couldn’t recall that Traci (Beth Maitland) was her daughter, but that didn’t stop Dina from showing sympathy when her new pal revealed that she’d lost her daughter Colleen.
Moments Of Levity
Dina hasn’t let her mental state affect her zingers, that’s for sure!
She may not be fully aware all the time who Phyllis and Hilary are, but she has instincts about them and doesn’t hesitate to tell them both off when they show up at the Abbott mansion.
When kept in familiar surroundings, Dina is capable of being present and in the moment. Since no one is ever sure how long that will last, each moment is regarded as a gift.
Future Tense
There will be difficult days ahead for the Abbott family as it bonds together in order to do what’s best for Dina.
In a perfect situation, she’ll be back in the family home soon and her children will hire a capable, full-time staff who can make sure her needs are met while Jack (Peter Bergman) and Ashley go back to battling for Jabot!
Still, 12% of you don’t feel bad for her at all after the horrible way she treated her kids for years.
