Daytime Emmys Apologize for Using the Wrong Photo in the In Memoriam Segment

 Comments

The 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards broadcast included an In Memoriam segment featuring The Bold and the Beautiful’s Diamond White singing an original song as images of deceased individuals from daytime appeared on-screen. Now, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) is apologizing for a photograph that didn’t match the honored decedent.

Daytime Emmys Issue an Apology

Marguerite Ray played the role of Mamie Johnson on The Young and the Restless for a decade starting in the early 1980s. She passed away on November 18, 2020. Unfortunately, an image of Ray’s successor on Y&R, Veronica Redd, captioned with Ray’s name, appeared on the screen during the Daytime Emmy tribute.

NATAS tweeted an apology for the mix-up. “During last night’s #DaytimeEmmys telecast, the In Memoriam segment included an incorrect picture in our remembrance of the late Y&R actress Marguerite Ray [Mamie]. We deeply regret this error and intend to re-edit the sequence for subsequent digital releases once a replacement image can be appropriately licensed,” read NATAS’ statement.

“We sincerely apologize to the Ray family — as well as to Veronica Redd, whose image was inadvertently used instead. Each of these Daytime icons deserved better from our Academy,” the tweet went on to read.

Ray played Mamie on Y&R from 1980 to 1990. Ray was recast with Redd as her nieces Olivia (Tonya Lee Williams) and Drucilla (Victoria Rowell) were being introduced to the canvas. Later, Mamie developed feelings for long-time employer John Abbott (Jerry Douglas), causing a rivalry between Mamie and John’s estranged wife Jill (Jess Walton).

Redd exited Y&R in the late 1990s when Mamie went off on a cruise. Mamie later returned to Genoa City, appearing on the show sporadically. In addition to Rey’s run on Y&R, her credits included Dynasty (she recurred as the character of Jane in 1989), The Flash, Simon & Simon, and The Rockford Files. She also recurred as Evelyn Lewis on Sanford. The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
