Characters on The Young and the Restless are changing careers willy-nilly, almost like an executive suite version of musical chairs, and it is overwhelming — probably for the characters themselves but definitely for viewers of the CBS soap.

Too Much Change On The Young and the Restless

Obviously, people change careers throughout their lifetimes. However, lately, in Genoa City, people have been jumping to new jobs at a rather alarming rate. It’s enough to give you whiplash, and it doesn’t always seem true to the characters.

Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) left medicine entirely to work in upper management at the family business, Chancellor-Winters. That’s a huge, shocking change. Before that, Moses Winters (Jacob Aaron Gaines) came to town to learn about medicine from Nate, but then he ended up interning with Devon Hamilton (Bryton James), learning about music. The whole thing did work to set up some drama between Devon and Nate, so it’s good soap opera fun, but it’s still strange.

Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) suddenly became CEO of Chancellor when much of her previous experience had been in modeling and working with underprivileged women. That was a shock, but she’s growing into her new career opportunity.

Then, there’s Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) who went from a fashion designer to a Chief Operating Officer to Chief Executive Officer at breakneck speed. By all accounts, she’s doing okay, but it is still quite a change.

Speaking of fashion change, Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) is suddenly changing her career from fashion to podcasting? That’s a pretty huge difference. Even Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) making that change after being in business so long is a big stretch. Now her business partner Chloe Mitchell Fisher (Elizabeth Hendrickson) is also contemplating a pretty significant career jump.

Up next, is Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor), who is staying in business, but moving from Jabot to Marchetti at the drop of a hat, and giving his mother Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) a junior PR position after she’d been in architecture and then later real estate.

Finally, we have Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) returning to Newman Enterprises after he spent years separating himself from the family business. It’s surprising to see him give up his spot at New Hope so quickly. What about working with son Noah Newman (Rory Gibson)?

What do you think is going on with all these job changes? Do you feel like it’s a good or bad thing for the characters? Let us know in the comments below.
