The End of The ‘Young’ In The Young and the Restless

The news that Michael Mealor is leaving his role as Kyle, it’s official…there is no more Young in The Young and the Restless.

The Young and the Restless: Acts One and Two

The show does a good job of playing its legacy characters, like Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), Nikki Reed Newman (Melody Scott Thomas), and Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman).

They’re solid with their adult professional class, Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson), Lily Winters (Christel Khalil), Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow), Devon Hamilton (Bryton James), Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic), Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan), Adam Newman (Mark Grossman), Sharon Rosales (Sharon Case), and Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy).

Y&R: The Nest Generation

But their young adults have been dropping right and left. Lola Rosales (Sasha Calle) left town to be Supergirl… er, open a new restaurant in Miami. Summer Newman (Hunter King) has a new job in Italy. Fen Baldwin is in and out of rehab, Ana Hamilton (Loren Lott) is managing a tour for brother Devon, Theo Vanderway (Tyler Johnson) is in Europe, Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) has severe daddy issues, and Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) is stuck in a surrogacy storyline with Abby Chancellor (Melissa Ordway) that traps her in mommy-ville.

What do you think? Post a comment!

And now Kyle Abbott – who, to be fair, is also obsessed with playing Daddy these days – is on his way out. This leaves absolutely no one to headline a hot, romantic summer storyline — the kind that soaps are famous for.

Young and Restless: Not Ready For Primetime

What about Moses Winters (Jacob Aaron Gaines) and Faith Newman (Reylynn Caster) some might pipe up. They’re not even old enough to vote, much less drink.

Exactly. They’re teens. They couldn’t even articulate if/when/how they’d like to take their chess-playing and horsie-riding relationship to the next level. They’re cute and sweet and… zzzzzz…. They may be ready to be summer front-burners at some point. But not this year.

We need characters who are old enough to do anything they want…but young enough to still screw it all up spectacularly. The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS.
