A Critic’s Review Of The Young and the Restless: Psychotic Appearance And Nostalgia

The author’s opinions on Y&R are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

When it comes to The Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review and a cheeky critique of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: The Critic Offers HIS Take

In addition to everything I said in our staff round-up, I’m very, very thankful for the classic Young and the Restless episode that was repeated on Thanksgiving Day.

There was the camptastic Colonel Douglas Austin. Heather Tom’s incarnation of Victoria. The original ranch set. Traci (Beth Maitland) actually driving story. Lauren (Tracey Bregman) in full bitch mode. Sheila’s (Kimberlin Brown) “puzzling blackmail scheme.” Michael (Christian LeBlanc) at his maniacal best. And Nina (Tricia Cast) at her homewrecking best. What a blast!

And thanks to the stroll down memory lane (pun intended), coupled with how Tuesday’s episode signed off, any doubt as to who Jordan (Colleen Zenk) and Claire Grace (Hayley Erin) are avenging dissipated. You don’t air an episode featuring the reappearances of psychotic femme fatale Eve Howard without a very specific agenda.

Further Y&R Musings

* At the risk of being tarred and feathered, I really like Audra (Zuleyka Silver) and Tucker (Trevor St. John) together and could totally get behind them being a smarmy, bad-for-each-other power couple.

* I hate to quibble with Jack, but shouldn’t “the most despicable man in Genoa City” be Victor, at least, as far as he’s concerned? Yeah, Tucker’s done some bad, bad things, but he very much did not replace Jack with a look-alive Peruvian drug lord, so…. Also, isn’t Christmas the most family holiday of all the family holidays?

What do you think? Post a comment!

* I’m not exactly sure if it’s an issue with chemistry, or the writing that they’re handed, or what, but I can’t help but feel that if either Bryton James (Devon Hamilton) or Trevor St John actually played a real longing for a reconciliation then I’d actually care whether or not these two ever make good on their familial connection.

* Jill (Jess Walton) and Nina managing to get on the same page where Chance (Conner Floyd) is concerned is giving me serious Jill and Katherine managing to get on the same page where Nina was concerned (boy did they hate her when she was with Phillip III) vibes, and I couldn’t be happier. Don’t you just love irony?

* So, Victor is so exceedingly suspicious of his own offspring and anyone and everyone in his inner circle that he feigned dementia to suss out “the one who would betray him most,” but he just takes stranger Claire and what she utters at face value? Huh?

* Welcome back, Judith Chapman [Gloria Fisher Baldwin]! My, how you’ve been missed.
