A Critic’s Review Of The Young and the Restless: Downright Farcical & Whiplash

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

The Young and the Restless Critic's Review for January 2 – January 6, 2023

When it comes to The Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: A Critic’s

We’re one week into 2023, and questions abound, namely:

* How much longer will we be subject to this farcical Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) vs. Jeremy Stark (James Hyde) vs. The Witches of Genoa City plot point that’s barely passing for a storyline?

When it comes down to it, there are only two ways this ends. Either Diane is the big bad the majority believe her to be — which really rather vindicates Phyllis Summers’s (Michelle Stafford), Ashley Abbott’s (Eileen Davidson), and Nikki Newman’s (Melody Thomas Scott) actions — or she’s truly reformation personified, and all her haters will have to bow down and beg for absolution. At this point, some ten months since Diane’s reintroduction, neither outcome particularly thrills.

* Which couples should I be rooting for? The chemistry-less partnering of Abby Many Names (Melissa Ordway) and Devon Hamilton (Bryton James)? The too cute for words (read: overly saccharin) could-bes, Sharon Rosales (Sharon Case) and Chance Chancellor (Conner Floyd)? The obviously built-up-to-fail Sally/Nick coupling? The waiting-in-the-wings romance of rapist and victim AKA Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) and Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson)?

* What’s up with Summer Newman Abbott’s (Allison Lanier) out-of-nowhere 180 where Phyllis and her actions are concerned? Can I sue The Young and the Restless for giving me whiplash?

What do you think? Post a comment!

* Why is it that the best present-day Y&R offerings are still the flashbacks to days gone by?

Further Y&R Musings

* Audra Charles (Zuleyka Silver) and Tucker McCall (Trevor St. John) are hoisted by their own petard *erm* distinctive notification chime.

* Did I spy a chemistry test between Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) and Nick?

* Gina Roma shoutout. Squeal!
