Let’s hope there’s a trust fund set up for little Harrison Locke’s future psychiatric sessions on The Young and the Restless. Viewers may have fallen in love with the little tyke now that he’s made his TV debut but Kyle Abbott, the boy’s potential (likely?) father, doesn’t seem very interested in getting to know his son.
Where’s The Love on The Young and the Restless?
The story of Kyle’s (Michael Mealor) extra-marital fling with Tara Locke (Elizabeth Lenier) was introduced earlier this year. The affair happened off-camera and occurred shortly before Kyle returned to Genoa City in 2018 when Mealor made his YR debut given that Harrison (Kellen Enriquez) is 3 years old.
YR is a show known for its characters acknowledging their feelings, letting emotions and realizations sweep over them like a wave. Strangely, learning that he may be a dad hasn’t resulted in Kyle feeling many heartfelt emotions. He’s been super-concerned that nemesis Sally (Courtney Hope) knows his big secret. And he should also be concerned that his cousin Theo (Tyler Johnson) knows, too. Kyle was aware this news might affect his renewed relationship with Summer (Hunter King).
But what about Kyle’s feelings for, you know, his likely son Harrison? Where are the speeches Kyle should be saying about what it’s like to realize he may have a child? Kyle spent formative years with his mother Diane (Susan Walters — oh, YR, please resurrect this character and bring Walters back if you can) in Chicago, growing up without his father Jack (Peter Bergman) being around on a regular basis.
For this reason alone, Kyle should want to play a role in his son’s life. In fact, Kyle wanting to explore his role as a father could result in plenty of conflict with Summer (Hunter King). What if Summer may not want to have children? She could fear that she could lose Kyle to both Harrison and Tara.
Clearly, Mealor is a great addition to the cast of YR. He stepped into the role of Kyle, playing key relationships with family members on his first day as if he’d been a part of the cast for years. YR fans have welcomed the talented actor into their living rooms and into their hearts. We know he can handle his character having a more emotional response to thinking he’s a father — but YR has to write it in order for him to fully play it.
Curiously, YR played out Ashland (Richard Burgi) finding out about the affair off-camera. Right now, per Tara, her controlling husband wants sole custody of Harrison. No matter what a paternity test reveals, we think Ashland should get custody. At least he wants the kid. The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
