Peter Bergman’s Fun Soap History

The Young and the Restless (Y&R) leading man Peter Bergman (Jack) has a long history of being part of a soap opera. His 37-year acting career has taken him to heights most actors can only dream possible.

Soap Shows did a little digging into Bergman’s history and found these five fun facts about his soapy television history.

5. Dr. Cliff Warner
Bergman took the role of Dr. Cliff Warner from 1979-1989. It was the actor’s first soap role, and turned him into a bonified soap star with an first Emmy nomination in 1983.

4. I’m Not a Doctor…
Bergman took advantage of his doctor TV persona to become the spokesperson for Vicks 44 Formula. It was during this cough syrup campaign that the phrase “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV” was coined.

3. Jack Abbott
Bergman left Pine Valley for Genoa City in 1989. Landing the role of Jack on The Young and the Restless was not only good luck for Bergman, but has become a permanent position that has stood the test of time. He even got the distinct honor of doing double duty with the introduction of doppelganger Marco Annicelli.

2. Crossing Over
Bergman crossed over to The Bold and the Beautiful for a two-episode stint as Jack in 1998. He also took Jack to primetime when he appeared as his daytime character on the hit show The Nanny.

1. Emmy Wins
Between 1990-2002 Bergman was nominated yearly for the Daytime Emmy. In that time he took home the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actor an impressive total of four times.
