[dropcap]S[/dropcap]oap veteran Gina Tognoni (literally) screamed her way into Genoa City as Phyllis Newman on the “The Young and the Restless” on August 11, 2014 and has been making waves ever since.
Here are five facts you may or may not know about this talented actress.
1.Gina Tognoni was born November 28, 1973 in St Louis, Missouri, but was raised in Syracuse, New York and Bristol, Rhode Island.
In 1992, Tognoni was named Miss Rhode Island Teen USA and a year later she was crowned Miss Rhode Island Teen All-American. She was later first runner-up in the Miss Teen All-American Pageant. After that, her acting career began when one of the judges became her manager.

2. Tognoni’s career in soaps began in 1995 when she won the role of Kelly Cramer on the ABC soap “One Life to Live.” Tognoni remained with the show until 2001, but returned to daytime television in July 2004 when she took over the role of Dinah Marler on the CBS soap “Guiding Light.” Tognoni later returned to OLTL, but left before the show’s 2012 finale.
3. Tognoni became engaged to Joseph Chiarello on November 21, 2007 and they wed May 16, 2009.
4. In 1997 and 1998, Tognoni was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Younger Lead Actress. In 2006 and 2008, she took home the gold Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In 2015 she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
5. When Tognoni is not working, she enjoys horseback riding, skiing and songwriting.
With all the turmoil in Genoa City these days, it will be interesting to see in what direction Tognoni takes Phyllis. Whatever she does, we know it will be fun to watch!
