In 1997 he surprised the audience of The Nanny by guest starring as his himself and his soap opera alter ego Jack Abbott in an episode titled “The Heather Biblow Story.” Guesting opposite Pamela Anderson, he lit up the screen along with other Y&R alum such as the iconic Jeanne Cooper.
Before he was Jack Abbott he was Dr. Cliff Warner on All My Children. This was a contract role that garnered him a Daytime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He played a doctor from 1979 until he began on The Young and The Restless in 1989.
When Bergman initially auditioned for All My Children it was for the role of Dr. Jeff Martin in 1979. When he was offered to part of Dr. Cliff Warner, he jumped at the chance.
Peter Bergman was the face of Vicks’ Formula 44 starring in their commercial. It was this ad where Bergman coined the phrase “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV.”
At the age of 20, Bergman’s love of music found him studying the piano. His passion for contemporary music has provided him with a hobby that has lasted for more than 40 years.
During a candid interview with people magazine, Bergman talked frankly about the birth of his daughter. His little girl was born via caesarian and this was too much for him to handle. Of this event Peter said, “..I wasn’t much help because I kind of passed out. I didn’t handle the blood terribly well. At one point, [my wife] Mariellen said, ‘Can we make at least this part about me?’”
In 1991, Bergman took on the role of Warren Taylor in the television film Palamino, based on the novel by Danielle Steel. His role in this movie may not have been the lead, but his sweet charm captured the audience and furthered his stardom.
His marriage to Christine Ebersole seemed like a match made in heaven when the two married in 1976. The actress, who played Carol Walsh on the hit sitcom Sullivan & Son, found their union unsuccessful. They separated in 1980 and ended up divorcing in 1981. His relationship with his current wife, Mariellen Bergman has lasted since 1985 has the couple have two children.
Bergman’s dad was in the US Navy and as a result of the constant travelling his mother ended up having him in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. His birthday is June 11th, 1953.
Bergman has been nominated for 21 Emmy Awards for spot of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The first time he was nominated was in 1983 for his role as Dr. Cliff Warner. Of the other twenty nominations, he’s won 4 times for his portrayal of Jack Abbott on the Young and The Restless.
