With Sally Sussman and Kay Alden out as head writer and story consultant of The Young and the Restless (YR), and Executive Producer Mal Young having taken over the reins as top scribe, some key moves need to be made to get the show back on track.
The soap lost its way over the past eight months with destructive character turns, questionable couplings and a preoccupation with the past. Here are five moves that need to be made, ASAP!
Redeem Cane
Poor Cane (Daniel Goddard) has been decimated. The formerly devoted husband got drunk and slept with another woman; then turned into a scheming, insecure jackass at work. In the process, he lost his wife Lily (Christel Khalil), his family, and his job.
Cane needs to make amends and redeem himself. Perhaps he could save nemesis Billy (Jason Thompson) or one of his twins from harm’s way. Then, Juliet needs to admit she drugged Cane, her baby isn’t his, and skip town.
End the Nikki/Jack Madness
After splitting with Victor (Eric Braeden) for the umpteenth time, Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) found comfort with Jack (Peter Bergman).
It’s a pairing viewers have seen before, and it never lasts. Jack’s too smart to go down that road, again.
He needs to end things with Nikki and nudge her back in Victor’s direction. Despite his feelings for The Moustache, Jack knows that’s where Nikki belongs.
Bring Back Chloe, Kevin, and Adam
Elizabeth Hendrickson is one of the most fascinating actresses on soaps and so is her mercurial alter ego Chloe. When she’s on screen, it’s impossible to take your eyes off her.
Have Chloe and Kevin (Greg Rikaart) return to Genoa City and admit Chloe to Fairview for therapy, where she eventually confesses that Adam isn’t really dead…

Game Over
One minute, Billy and Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) called it quits, realizing their relationship was a mistake. The next, they were moving in together. Now, Phyllis has turned clingy and is using sex to keep Billy by her side, while he’s pulled toward work and Victoria (Amelia Heinle).
Phyllis deserves better and needs to revert back to the strong powerful woman she was, and Billy needs to realize the only way to ever make peace with Jack is to leave Phyllis in the dust.
Kiss Off
Just as the Devon (Bryton James), Mariah (Cameron Grimes), Jordan (Darnell Kirkwood) and Hilary (Mishael Morgan) quadrangle was gaining momentum, Noah (Robert Adamson) and Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) got into the mix.
Things took a convoluted turn when Mariah and Tessa shared a kiss. The surprise smooch not only sabotages Noah and Tessa and Devon and Mariah’s romances, but also heavily takes away from Hilary’s jealousy of and rivalry with Mariah, which is one of the show’s best.
The lip lock needs to be explained away, so this story can get back on the right track.
