Zoe Buckingham got out of Los Angeles quickly and flew to Paris after finding out the man she loved, Carter Walton, was in love with Quinn Fuller Forrester. In this week’s Travel Tuesday, her portrayer, Kiara Barnes, talks about how to make airline travel as pleasant as possible.
While Zoe may not be wise when it comes to matters of the heart — she was crushed by both Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) and Thomas Forrester (Matthew Atkinson), Barnes is adept at knowing what goes into experiencing a productive and comfortable flight. “I have definitely learned what works and what doesn’t from trial and error,” Barnes said on her Talk Theory podcast. “I thought I’d share some of my tips and tricks to make your next trip smooth sailing.”
First up, the actress says that it’s important to dress for comfort given how long some flights can be. She says that choosing some stylish loungewear can improve her mental state. Barnes used to wear oversized hoodies, sweat pants, socks, and sneakers for flying. To paraphrase Billy Crystal’s Fernando Lamas, “looking good can help you feel good.” Barnes says, “I found that just elevating into a cute and comfy loungewear [outfit] for travel gives me a calm and confident feeling.”
Barnes says she doesn’t wear a gown and high heels while flying unless she has to — and she commends those who can travel that way — but she likes instead to feel comfortable. “There’s no compromise on that,” she says. “Since COVID hit, loungewear has gotten really big. It can last a long while. ” Barnes adds that if you haven’t tried wearing loungewear while flying, it might be a good idea to switch it up.
Purchasing food either inside terminals or onboard flights can be costly, so Barnes says it’s a good idea to bring your own food. “First class or not, airline food isn’t the best,” she says. “Chef Ramsey is not in the back of your flight cooking up the best of the best. I get that.” That’s why Barnes comes prepared with pre-made food from home. And if for some reason, you don’t break into your food during the flight, Barnes says you’ll want to eat something when you get off the plane. Speaking of “planes,” Barnes is set to return as Ruby Akuda in Season 2 of Fantasy Island later this year.
Other tips Barnes shares include arriving early at the airport (something she learned from her dad) and making lists in advance so that you won’t miss your flight and you won’t forget anything you need. She’ll make lists of things she knows she’ll need, from toothpaste to workout outfits. She received a suggestion once to pack by each outfit she’ll be wearing. “I don’t know why I never did this,” Kiara Barnes says. “This is genius. You pre-plan what you’re going to wear, and you won’t overpack!”
