The Bold and the Beautiful had a choice to make recently with the character of Thomas Forrester. In the capable hands of Matthew Atkinson, Thomas’s portrayer, we’ve seen just how complex the character can be. The B&B actor brought Thomas to the edge and back with the mental illness storyline. Now, the show has chosen a new role for Thomas to play — hero.
After Thomas had surgery related to his behavior issues, he appeared to be back to his old self. Viewers weren’t sure, however, what Thomas would do once he got the chance to be around Hope Logan Spencer (Annika Noelle) again. She was the object of his desire but now, it appears that Thomas is keeping Hope in the “friend zone.”
When Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton) recently found himself in jail for killing Vinny Walker (Joe LoCicero), he asked Thomas to look in on Hope and the children, Douglas (Henry Joseph Samiri) and Beth. Thomas agreed. If he were still an evil guy, Thomas would have taken advantage of Liam’s predicament and made the moves on Hope. Technically, he had Liam’s blessing — at least to hang around Hope. Time and chemistry might have taken care of the rest.
Once Thomas had information that would exonerate Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) and Liam, he wanted to go to the authorities so they could be freed. He was temporarily derailed by Justin Barber (Aaron D. Spears), who was carrying around some animosity toward his boss and “pal” but eventually, Thomas made his way to the police (with Hope’s help) and willingly gave Deputy Chief Baker (Dan Martin) the evidence to clear the Spencer men.
Sure, Justin was also going to do the same thing, but Thomas had no way of knowing that. At no point did Thomas try to align himself with Justin to keep Bill and Liam in jail. Thomas could have used this opportunity to worm his way back into Hope’s life only he chose not to. He’s a good guy again.
Even Bill, who is no fan of Thomas’s, told him that they were even now. Thomas is free to find a new love interest and get on with his career. Who knows? Now that Thomas has finally proven he’s a good guy, maybe Hope will fall for him for real?
We’ve no doubt that Atkinson would have run with it had Bold and the Beautiful continued to present him as an antagonist. However, as a legacy character, Thomas will someday (years and years from now) be the family patriarch. Other characters can regard him as someone upstanding given his recent actions.
There is one thing that B&B should address to wipe the slate clean with Thomas. A few years ago, Thomas ran Forrester intern Emma Barber (Nia Sioux) off the road after realizing that she’d discovered the secret that baby Beth was alive and Thomas knew about it.
B&B could either show that Emma’s actually been alive all this time and has been in a coma or is in rehab getting better or that Thomas was not in his right mind when he drove Emma to her death. Once this dangling plotline is addressed, Thomas can truly embark on his next adventure with a clean slate.
