On the heels of Courtney Hope announcing that she’s leaving her role as Sally on The Bold and the Beautiful, another actor has come forward to confirm that his time on the half-hour soap has come to an end.
First, Hope confirmed on social media that she was wrapping up at B&B. “It’s been the greatest year, and I will forever be thankful for my time as Sally Spectra,” the actress posted.
Now comes word that her co-star Alex Wyse is also gone as Saul. Wyse confirmed on his Instagram page that he, too, was on to “the next adventure!”
What does this mean for remaining Spectra family members Patrika Darbo (Shirley) and Danube Hermosillo (Darlita)?
Neither actress has confirmed that they’re are exiting B&B, but as the Spectra gang has not rallied to find a new home since their base was blown up last year it doesn’t appear as if the clan is going to be a significant presence on the show in the near future.
Darbo did get some recent good news — the actress has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy for her role as Mickey Walker on The Bay in the category of Outstanding Guest Performer in a Digital Daytime Drama Series.
Ironically, she’ll compete against Hope’s real life beau Chad Duell (Michael, General Hospital), who is nominated for playing Adam Kenway on The Bay.
As to why the Spectra storyline was jettisoned there are likely several factors — all of which have little to do with the dynamic and appealing performers who were cast in the roles of Sally, Shirley, Saul, and Darlita.
Supercouple Sally and Thomas (which sizzled on-screen) took a blow after Pierson Fode left the soap. Also, the show being only 30 minutes has always been problematic as the its cast current could likely carry an hour drama.
There’s only so much screen time each day. And, even with these four characters having less of a presence, the show still has other favorites including Quinn (Rena Sofer), Eric (John McCook), and Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) simmering on the back burner without a major storyline.
It’s a loss to the show as a family of “have nots” is a smart contrast to have against a bevy of wealthy characters. Perhaps, Sally someday will make a comeback and we can’t help but think that her family — Shirley, Saul, and Darlita — will be included in that story.
