Throughout soap opera history there have been hardworking family matriarchs who want their children to have better lives. That describes Beth Logan, mother to Brooke and her siblings, on The Bold and the Beautiful.
While the character didn’t have a lengthy consecutive run on the show, she was played by four different actresses: Judith Baldwin, Nancy Burnett (the longest), Marla Adams (Dina, The Young and the Restless), and Robin Riker (ex-Naomi, General Hospital).
Beth ran a catering company to provide for her children: son, Storm, and daughters, Brooke, Donna, and Katie after her husband Stephen ran out on the family. One night, she was hired to caterer an affair for Eric and Stephanie Forrester in Beverly Hills. Beth had hoped that Eric would recall their romance from college. He didn’t recollect who Beth was right away, but he later did and their relationship rekindled.
Eric saw Beth through a breast cancer ordeal and prepared to marry her. Steph learned that her friend Beth Logan was really Eric’s old flame, “Liz Henderson,” after seeing her name on a bible. As Beth recovered, Stephanie hired Conway Weston, a private eye, to locate Stephen and bring him home.
Au Revoir
Stephanie continued her plan to reunite Beth and Stephen (in order to increase her chances of hanging onto Eric) by blackmailing Brooke into pushing her parents into a reconciliation. Next, she convinced her pal Bill Spencer to offer new employee Stephen a job in Paris – if he didn’t take it, he’d be fired from his position!
Steph urged Beth to go and live with a man who adored her in a romantic city, and Beth agreed. She and Stephen left town, returning occasionally for family events like the christening of Brooke’s son, Eric, Jr., with Eric, and her subsequent weddings to Ridge. Beth was hurt that her own daughter had wed her ex-flame, but they worked through it.
Beth was shocked to learn that Stephanie’s former flame, Massimo Marone, offered Stephen millions of dollars if he’d convince Brooke to move to Europe by lying to her that he was dying. It wasn’t in Beth’s makeup to ruin her daughter’s happiness, even though she had once wed Eric, the true love of Beth’s life.
After she initially went along with the plan, Beth told Brooke the truth. Years later, Beth and Stephen divorced over her lingering feelings for Eric. Stephen returned to Los Angeles and romanced Pam, Stephanie’s sister.
Untimely Passing on The Bold and the Beautiful
Beth returned to Los Angeles to be with her family after suffering a series of strokes due to early dementia. Sadly, Beth’s condition deteriorated. She agreed to remarry Stephen, but her future happiness was cut short. After an argument with Stephanie, Beth went into the Forrester pool to retrieve a piece of lace that was important to her that Stephanie callously discarded. Beth drowned, devastating her family and friends.
Legacy Characters
Beth’s family has never forgotten what a beautiful, caring mother she was. When Rick and Maya were naming their daughter, they chose the name “Lizzie,” a variation of Elizabeth, Beth’s full name. Next, Hope and Liam named their daughter, “Beth,” after Hope’s late grandmother.
On Brooke’s most recent wedding day to Ridge, she heard a maternal voice from the other side calling out to her – ironically, it wasn’t her own mother whom she head, but rather Stephanie! The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
