Thorsten Kaye has once again been nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the category of Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Ridge on The Bold and the Beautiful. The star is revealing not only what’s on his reel, but how the submission came together.
Ridge had lots of storyline last year including finding out that his wife Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) had betrayed him by kissing Bill (Don Diamont) during a vulnerable moment. Later, he tapped into his loving father side in order to help daughter Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) through her opioid crisis.
“It’s great,” Kaye tells Soap Hub about his nomination. “It’s [your fellow actors] watching and thinking you should be in the top five. it’s a good place to be.”
Asked what was the greatest obstacle in putting his reel together, Kaye defers to Eva Basler, BB’s VP of Communications, and Casey Kasprzyk, Supervising Producer, who assembled his submission.
“The biggest challenge is finding when Eva has time,” says Kaye. “She’s the one who put it together with Casey, the two of them. I’m eternally grateful. They’re just better at it. They know what people look for.
“I wouldn’t be having this conversation with you if it weren’t for them,” Kaye adds. The scenes in which Ridge found out about Brooke’s betrayal were taped prior to the COVID-19 production shutdown. Ridge’s participation in Steffy’s addiction story was shot after the show returned to taping and there had to be strict adherence to safety protocols.
“It was easy to stay away [from Brooke],” Kaye notes. “But to have your daughter be in so much pain and not be able to comfort her?” The actor credits director Anthony Pascarelli for assembling the scenes involving Steffy’s addiction. “He’s so amazing. We had to sit and make it look like we were close [but we were not able to be]. That’s hard. Jacqui stood up and was so great. Everyone was in those scenes.”
Kaye notes that part of being on daytime has always been hitting your mark, which today includes not being too close to your scene partner. “I know it’s a technical medium but you can’t let it be,” he offers. “You have to be able to make that connection [with your fellow actor].”
Kaye is thrilled that some of his fellow colleagues are nominated, too. “Jacqui [Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama Series] should be nominated every year,” the actor offers. “She’s just an amazing human being. People [may] forget how funny, witty, and smart Darin [Brooks, Wyatt, Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series nominee] is. He definitely deserves it. He shows up, is prepared, and comes up with something that maybe you didn’t expect.”
And while Courtney Hope (Sally) is currently on The Young and the Restless, she earned an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nomination for her time on BB. “She’s got a lot to give,” Kaye says. “She’s lovely.” The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) airs weekdays on CBS.
