Triangles have been a geometric fixture on The Bold and the Beautiful since the show’s early days when sisters Katie and Donna tangoed with Rocco, and brothers Ridge and Thorne fought over Caroline. This trend continues with triangles today.
The Bold and the Beautiful Polling
But are there too many? Sometimes a person needs a scorecard to keep up with all the different entanglements!
Liam (Scott Clifton) is in a triangle with his baby mamas Hope (Annika Noelle) and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood); Hope is one with Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) and Liam. Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) is in one with Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Shauna (Denise Richards). Wyatt (Darin Brooks) is in a triangle with Flo (Katrina Bowden) and Sally (Courtney Hope). Eric (John McCook) is so fond of his ex, Brooke, we’re sure that Quinn (Rena Sofer) probably feels like she’s in a triangle, too!
Geometry 101
The majority of you, almost 88%, say, yes, there are too many triangles on BB. While they’re a necessary storytelling staple, there’s nothing wrong with a few couples having different kinds of conflicts than a third-party/romantic entanglement.
Look at Katie (Heather Tom) and Bill (Don Diamont) — their love was tested recently not by a romantic rival but by Katie needing a kidney. Another couple that doesn’t have a conflict in the form of another person is Pam (Alley Mills) and Charlie (Dick Christie). Sure, a conflict-free duo may not get a ton of story, but there have to be ways of writing characters without bringing on a love foil.
Right Angles
The rest of The Bold and the Beautiful fans polled, a little over 12%, feel that no, BB does not have too many triangles. Where would a good soap be without them? Sure, arguing over Thomas is enough conflict for Ridge and Brooke but adding Shauna making a play for Ridge heightens the drama!
Who could forget Katie ripping into Brooke and Bill after, while suffering from postpartum depression, she encouraged them to get together — and they complied! The main story on BB for years was Ridge being torn between Taylor (Hunter Tylo) and Brooke. Triangles are integral to BB’s success.
Bold Alternative Tales
BB doesn’t just tell romantic triangle stories even though they’re a big part of the show. The half-hour serial has excelled at social issue tales, including ones that involve alcoholism, breast cancer, homelessness, and the transgender community. The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
