Soaps Documentary Goes Behind The Scenes At Bold and the Beautiful, Bell Family

Fans of soap operas love it when the show pulls back the curtain to reveal how things are done. Often, these peeks are just brief glimpses, and much of the knowledge we have about how soaps are made are from people involved talking about it, rather than it being shown. But that’s about to change with a new documentary that will give folks a look behind the curtain of The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as its creators, William Bell and Lee Phillip Bell.

It’s Never Been Done on This Scale Before

Award-winning Amplify Pictures is financing a new documentary that’s currently in production called Soaps. It focuses specifically on B&B and will take a look behind-the-scenes that’s never been done before in such a large capacity. It will also shed light on the Bell family, who also created The Young and the Restless. (Find out how Y&R’s Lauralee Bell paid tribute to her dad, William.)

According to Variety, the documentary will be, “A love letter to an often-dismissed art form and an unexpected look at the rapid-fire process by which soap operas are made.” The director of Soaps, Matt Wolf (Spaceship Earth, 2020), stated that upon showing up at the studio where B&B is produced, he was suitably, “Blown away by the Herculean effort that goes into bringing these stories to life. It’s a fascinating and unexpected world that is ripe for a documentary.”

Soap Operas Are Often Overlooked

Wolf was also thankful that the cast, crew, and Bells welcomed him and his documentary crew with open arms, and remarked that they “tirelessly bring this show to life and have made the genre flourish.” He further noted that it was a no-brainer for Amplify to join in on the project, because the company understood, “the sweet spot between art and popular culture, which is the core of this project.”

The CEO of Amplify, Joe Lewis, who also produced the TV series 100 Foot Wave for HBO, stated that “Soaps have built universes that generations have escaped into, but the world behind the camera is just as fascinating as the drama onscreen.” He also felt that because many of Wolf’s projects focused on how history and creativity merge, he was the perfect choice for this film, describing it as, “An epic look at this significant but often overlooked cultural institution.” (Learn how Lee Phillip Bell made sure soaps helped people.)
