The Bold and the Beautiful’s Sean Kanan and his wife Michele have recently published their new book, Way of the COBRA Couples. The third in Kanan’s COBRA series, this one focuses on how to build and maintain a relationship while simultaneously retaining one’s individuality. The Kanans worked hard on it and recently opened up about what went into creating the book.
After the success of Kanan’s first two books, Way of the COBRA and Way of the COBRA: Welcome to the Kumite, he and Michele felt they next needed to collaborate on a book for couples and how to navigate the bumpy road of relationships. By working together and getting past any points that they differed on, they told Soap Opera Digest that, “This practice of respecting each other’s input actually strengthened our understanding of each other, both as partners and co-authors.”
Their goal was to show other couples you don’t need perfection in a relationship. “It’s about showing up every day with intention, love, and a willingness to grow together,” they said. They wanted to put the power in the reader’s hands so couples could create their own rules and “Embrace their unique dynamic, and understand that the hard times are just as important as the good ones in shaping who they become as partners.” (Learn about Kanan’s B&B character, Deacon.)
The Kanans also found that in collaborating on the book, they learned some things about themselves as a couple. “Writing this book made us reflect deeply on our relationship and the way we navigate challenges,” they said, adding that being open and honest and respecting one another was key. They explained, “We realized that every time we hit a snag during the writing, we were mirroring how we handle conflict in real life.”
The two found that they each needed to fully listen to one another and then figure out a common ground for their ideas to hit the page. They also found that they became advocates for each other’s points of view.
Both Sean and Michele opened up about their relationship, finding that sharing such information with the public wasn’t easy for them. But they pressed on and discussed some of the rough waters they navigated, revealing that “Those sections were the most emotionally draining but also the most rewarding to complete.”
